FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno City softball team opens the second half of Central Valley Conference play this week, when they travel to Merced JC for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. Games are scheduled for 1 and 3 PM against the host Blue Devils, who are two games back of the Rams in the CVC standings. Fresno City opens play this week in third place.
The Rams head north tomorrow following a split in a doubleheader this past weekend against visiting So Cal opponent, Cuesta College. Fresno City's potent offense was on display in the opener, as the Rams tagged Cuesta's Irene Sias for eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits, en route to a dominant 8-0, run-rule victory. Infielders Teya Vincent, Desarae Moreno and Emily Puente paced the Rams offense with two hits apiece, with Puente knocking in a team-high four runs, and Vincent contributing a solo home run in the win. Freshman Katie Delgadillo pitched five shut out, no-hit innings, conceding only one walk while striking out eight to earn her 13th victory of the year.
Game two proved to be more of a pitcher's duel, as both Fresno City and Cuesta managed to score runs in the first two innings respectively, but struggled to get much else going with their bats. Vincent scored on a fielder's choice in the opening frame to give Fresno City an early 1-0 lead. Delgadillo remained nearly perfect on Saturday for the Rams, before conceding her first run on a Molly Mulvaney bloop single in the second inning, as Cuesta knotted things up at one after two innings. Delgadillo would scatter four hits across seven strong innings before giving up a late home run to pitcher Emmilee Boles in the top of the seventh, as Cuesta defeated Fresno City in the finale 2-1.
Fresno City opens play tomorrow with a 14-12 overall record and 7-5 record in CVC play, good for third place in the Central Valley Conference. The Rams look to complete the season sweep of Merced JC (11-15; 5-5) tomorrow when they travel to take on the Blue Devils in a doubleheader. It's a busy week for Fresno City softball, as they look to play five games in six days, weather permitting. They'll play host to visiting Porterville College (17-11; 5-5) on Thursday afternoon, before heading to Sacramento to complete a doubleheader against Cosumnes River College (17-9; 7-6). Fresno City returns to CVC play next week on the road, when they travel to Coalinga for a doubleheader against West Hills.
