Bio
Tony Caviglia returns for his 22nd season at Fresno City College after posting a 21-year regular season record of 161-49.
And never having a losing season in 25 years as a head coach, he has led FCC to the postseason in 20 times.
Caviglia came to FCC in 1999 after three seasons as the head coach at Chabot College, where he posted a 22-10 record.
As a head coach at the community college level, he has posted an 24-year record of 188-75 coming into 2020.
Before becoming the head coach at Chabot, Caviglia was the defensive line coach at Purdue University from 1991 to 1993.
His coaching career began at Chabot College where he served as an assistant coach. This led to coaching positions at the University Southern California, New Mexico State Univ. and Ohio State Univ., where he coached in the 1988 Rose Bowl, 1987 Florida Citrus Bowl and 1990 Liberty Bowl.
With a regular season winning percentage of .766 as head coach at FCC, Caviglia has posted the highest winning percentage in the Rams’ storied history. He is also the only Ram head coach to take each of his teams to the postseason.
He was named 2000 State Region II Coach of the Year”. He has won Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2019.
In 2016, Caviglia became the winningest coach in Fresno City College history and currently has 166 wins. Surpassing Clare Slaughter’s 136 wins from 1959-1978. He also is the longest tenured football coach at FCC and in the State of California.
In addition to winning football games, Caviglia says the philosophy of his program is to prepare sophomores to transfer on to four-year colleges, receive their degrees and hopefully continue their playing careers. He has enjoyed great success in this, as he has helped hundreds of players land scholarships all across the country at all levels of collegiate football.
Among the players the FCC staff has helped move on to the next level, include some who have played in the National Football League: Maurice Morris, Cameron Worrell, Matt Giordano, Zach Diles, Tony Curtis and David Veikune. All are former NFL Rams who played for “Coach C.”
Caviglia believes that the game of football is a very hard game to be successful at, and in order to achieve that success, the players must make a great commitment both on and off the field. He also believes that because of the commitment level they have, the players that pass through the FCC program are prepared with the skills necessary to be successful in life beyond the game.
Caviglia received his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and a Master’s degree in Administration from USC.
Caviglia, 58, and his wife Kristi have three sons, Andrew, Michael, and Nicholas.
