UNDEFEATED RAMS TO HOST COAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEK
Rams host badminton championships Friday and Saturday
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno City College badminton team and their undefeated record (8-0) look to stay perfect against the Coast Conference this Friday and Saturday, when they host the Coast Conference singles and doubles finals. From the field of 21, six singles players will advance to the CCCAA State Championships, while eight doubles pairs from the field of 12 will advance to State as well. The 2019 CCCAA State Championships will be held in Pasadena next week.
In the single's bracket, Fresno City's Soua Kong holds the top seed, while Uyen Napier will also be the favorite in her opening match as the #5 seed. "(In) individual sports there is a lot of pressure being ranked #1 and #2," says Fresno City badminton head coach Panhia Vang. "Expectations of performing to perfection and winning are high." Also holding high seeds for the Rams will be Nari Chang (#7) and Stephanie Tran (#8), while Angelica Completo, Dominique Yang and Shakaila Eddings will also participate as the #11, #13 and #15 seeds, respectively.
Skyline College will be represented by two of the stronger players in the field, in #2 seed Paola Candolada and #3 seed Katie Tan. City College of San Francisco's Tinnie Situ rounds out the top four seeds in singles play. "In our conference, the (top 7 seeds) are all strong and skilled players," says Vang. "We will have to be ready."
Fresno City College also holds two of the top three seeds in the doubles bracket, as the pairs Kong/Napier and Chang/Tran hold the #1 and #3 seeds, respectively, and earned first-round byes. The doubles pair of Yang/Eddings holds the #8 seed and will open bracket play against Wu/La from De Anza College in Cupertino.
