RAMS HOST RIVAL CLOVIS IN MATCH BETWEEN 1ST PLACE TEAMS
Fresno City plays host to rival Clovis CC with sole possession of 1st Place in the CVC on the line.
FRESNO, Calif. – Defending CCCAA and national champion Fresno City Rams will look to take sole possession of first place in the Central Valley Conference Tuesday, when they take on the visiting Crush of Clovis Community College. The teams enter play this week in a tie for first place following the first week of CVC conference play.
The Rams (7-1-3; 1-0-0), who enter the week ranked #4 in the latest CCCSIA women's soccer poll, are coming off a week where they recorded a win and a draw in two contests. Fresno City opened CVC play last Tuesday at home, when they played host to district rival Reedley College. Sophomore forward Taylor Alkire (Strathmore, Calif./Strathmore) opened the scoring for the Rams with a goal ten minutes into the match to put Fresno City up 1-0 over the visiting Tigers. In all, the Rams scored four goals in the first 45 minutes of play, with Alkire recording two goals in the first half. Sophomore forward Nia Valero (Hanford, Calif./Hanford) capped the scoring for the Rams with a goal in the 85th minute, as Fresno City recorded their 6th shutout victory of the 2018 season, defeating Reedley 5-0 in their CVC opener.
Fresno City closed out the week on the road in a non-conference match last Friday, when the Rams travelled to play Southern California foe College of the Canyons. Head Coach Oliver Germond's team was in an unfamiliar situation early in the match, conceding a goal in the 8th minute to put the Rams in an early 1-0 deficit on the road. However, Fresno City quickly responded as Alkire scored an unassisted goal in the 15th minute, knotting things up at one in the first half. The Rams managed nine shots on goal in the contest, but couldn't connect for another goal over the remaining 75 minutes. However, sophomore goalkeeper Ruby Campa (Firebaugh, Calif./Firebaugh) recorded five saves as Fresno City played College of the Canyons to a 1-1 draw in their final regular season non-conference match.
Tuesday's match will provide the Rams with an opportunity to take sole possession of first place, as both Fresno City and Clovis enter the match undefeated in CVC play. The Crush come into Tuesday afternoon's contest with a 2-0 conference mark and an 8-1-2 overall record, following victories over College of the Sequoias and Reedley. Neither Fresno City, nor Clovis, have allowed a goal in CVC play as both teams have been dominant against their conference opponents during the opening week of conference play.
The match scheduled to begin at 4 PM opens a three-game homestand for the Rams, and will cap a men's and women's soccer doubleheader at Fresno City College on Tuesday afternoon. They'll close the week at home against visiting Sequoias (1-6-0; 1-1-0) this Friday.
