ALLISON NAMED CVC MVP, SCOTT NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
Baseball, softball recognized with All-CVC honors
FRESNO, Calif.-Fresno City College was well-represented today, as 12 Rams were named first or second team All-Central Valley Conference by the CVC baseball and softball head coaches. Fresno City baseball coach Ron Scott was also named Central Valley Conference coach of the year following another season where the Rams won a CVC championship. The CVC honors followed strong seasons by the baseball and softball teams, which saw both programs advance to the CCCAA postseason.
Fresno City baseball's sophomore outfielder Chet Allison was an unanimous selection as CVC Most Valuable Player following a year where he finished second in the State in batting average (.449) and third in the State home runs (11). Allison also finished second in the CVC in RBIs with 49, helping to lead Fresno City to a CVC title, and a postseason appearance. The Rams defeated Cabrillo in the first round of the CCCAA playoffs, and advance to take on Ohlone College in the Super Regionals this week.
Also receiving honors for baseball was pitcher Alec Gamboa, who was named CVC pitcher of the year following a season where he finished 7-1 with a save in 14 appearances, including seven starts. Gamboa finished the season with a 1.96 ERA, good for fifth in the conference, and struck out a staggering 88 batters in only 55 innings, while winning his last four decisions. He pitched eight innings, yielding only two runs (one earned) while striking out nine, in the Rams 8-3 victory over Cabrillo to advance to the Super Regionals.
Baseball coach Ron Scott was named CVC Coach of the Year following another CVC title, while pitcher Jiavanni Savaadra, infielder Ian Ross and outfielder Chase Prieto were named All-CVC first team. Pitchers Eddie Rios and Mikell Chavez, and utility player Kole Simas were named All-CVC second team. Allison and Gamboa were also recognized for their defense this season, being named to the All-CVC Gold Glove team.
Softball was also recognized with All-CVC honors following another successful season that saw the Rams advance to the postseason, as three players were named All-CVC first and second team, while six others were named All-CVC Honorable Mention. A pair of talented freshmen took home first team honors, while a sophomore outfielder was awarded second team honors. First baseman Emily Puente took home All-CVC first team honors following a season where she hit .437, 11 home runs, and knocked in a team-high 35 RBIs as a freshman. Fellow freshman Teya Vincent also earned All-CVC first team honors following a season where she hit .390, six home runs, while knocking in 33 RBIs. Vincent also led the team with 16 stolen bases.
Sophomore outfielder Savannah Pena was recognized on the All-CVC second team following a strong 2019 season. Pena finished the season with a .283 batting average, hitting four home runs and recording 24 RBIs. She finished second on the team in runs scored with 38. Five freshmen and one sophomore were also recognized as All-CVC Honorable Mention selections. Freshmen Courtney Beckwith, Katie Delgadillo, Victoria Hernandez, Desarae Moreno and Daci Tovar were All-CVC Honorable Mention selections, as was sophomore Infinity Chacon.
Fresno City baseball (32-10) will travel to play Ohlone College this week in the CCCAA Super Regionals. The opener for that series is scheduled for Thursday. Fresno City softball finishes their season with a record of 22-19, advancing to the CCCAA Regionals before falling on the road to Sierra College this past weekend.
